Import pdf has been a useful tool for all the drafting users. when come to user who saves plenty of time without redraw all the entities when they receive PDF drawing from customer. So, today, let us talk about it, go through it. Let us understand the proper workflow of import pdf, and the improvement that needed to make the experience even better.

Before we get into the import feature, there are some information that we need to aware before we purchase the DRAFTSIGHT software. Import PDF feature used to be an additional plug-in in DRAFTSIGHT, which cost around RM1500 for a year. Now then, the DRAFTSIGHT 2021 come with the import pdf feature, but there is a catchy part. Import PDF feature only can be found in the Premium and Enterprise Plus version of DRAFTSIGHT. The other version of DRAFTSIGHT may still require purchasing additional plug-in to import pdf. So, make sure you to choose the correct version of DRAFTSIGHT software before you request for quotation or purchase the license online.

In addition, before we use the import PDF feature in DRAFTSIGHT, perhaps we need to understand the difference between the normal pdf drawings or pdf with layers information in the drawing. The pdf file types is based on the supplier export methods. Some supplier may use the printing method to generate pdf, so we will be getting pdf drawing without any layer properties. If the supplier, using the dedicated export tools to generate the pdf file, then the pdf file will come with layer properties.

Some PDF export drawing files come with layers properties, some PDF drawing without layers properties.

When you get to the IMPORT section in DRAFTSIGHT, you will see the PDF option over there. When you click on it, the window pop-up will allow you to choose, which import option you wish to use, import as in block, or batch processing. If you choose on batch processing, the DRAFTSIGHT will execute the process with several pdf file. If you click on this option at the right side, allowing user to define, the import pdf behavior, you can choose to import the necessary information that you see fit, based on your situation. When you move to the layer option, you may use the PDF layer properties, or import as a single layer entity in DRAFTSIGHT.

Import setting allow you to import single pdf drawings, or import pdf files by batch.

Additional options allow you to decide, to include additional information or ways to import layer properties.

After selecting your pdf file, you can select where is the insertion point of your drawing. You can define the location base on the coordinate you have, or you can define later after this window pop-up. Same goes to the scale unit and rotation. in the window pop-up. Make sure, you are clear, where is the best location for your drawing, and the scale that you need, to do minor or major editing after import the drawings. Example, if you need to fix the drawing at dedicated coordinate, X=100, Y=800, Z=30, editing scale 1:35, 15 Degree rotation, you can direct insert it, and click okay to execute the import PDF process.

The import also include option for you to define the location of the drawings, scale and rotation for your drawings.

After select the location of the drawings, the entities will import into DRAFTSIGHT.

Once the import process is complete, you can continue to edit, modify, and evaluate the drawings from DRAFTSIGHT.

After import the drawing from PDF, the line become entities, ready for user to modify or measure.
