CNY Lantern – 3D Creator and 3D Sculptor (xDesign & xShape)

Wishing everyone a Happy Chinese New Year.

Now, pandemic won’t stop us from celebrating CNY with our loved ones. So, design your own CNY lantern and send it to your families!

Here’s the step-by-step guide on how to design your own CNY lantern by using 3DEXPERIENCE platform.

Start the design of CNY Lantern with the closed primitive shape under Subdivision tab.

Lantern’s body

  1. Use QuadBall to build up the body.
  2. Adjust the scale and position of the QuadBall.

Lantern’s Accessories

  1. Use Cylinder and scale to desire size, then locate on top of the QuadBall.
  2. Switch to xDesign apps to continue on the Lantern’s Accessories.
  3. Fillet on the sharp edges in xDesign apps.
  4. Switch back to xShape, use the Globe to create the part.
  5. Rotate some elements of the surfaces to look more “hook”.
  6. Switch to xDesign apps just one click and use the mirror feature to complete the other side.
  7. Switch back to xShape to create the remaining accessories.
  8. Use Cylinder and simply push, pull, drag, scale and crease your subdivision model to get the shape you desire.
  9. Switch to xDesign apps to create the pattern for the part.
  10. Switch back to xShape to create the remaining accessories.
  11. Create a semi-Globe then apply at the middle.
  12. Use Cylinder to create the last accessories by pushing and pulling on the subdivision model.
  13. Create the pattern by using the circular pattern in xDesign.

Then import the file to SOLIDWORKS Visualize to render look more with Chinese New Year’s feel.
