Do you have what it takes to drive innovation? Being recognised as the most creative Innovation Day in Asia Pacific South Region by SOLIDWORKS last year, IME Group of Companies has kick started the month-long event again this year. Themed The Power You Need to Drive Innovation, the event tour started from Penang and Selangor on 5 and 6 October respectively, bringing the latest technology trends also to Johor, Melaka, Pahang, Perak and Sarawak throughout the month.
It marks the tenth year since IME began organising this annual event in 2007. With an objective to cultivate innovation among the industry, and to serve as a platform to gather innovators and industry thought leaders as well as the academians, this event grows year by year, expanded from 3 locations to 7 locations in Malaysia, from no more than 100 participants to more than 1000 participants now.
“This year we are expecting a total of some 1,200 participants. We aim to form the biggest innovative community, sharing with them stories and the key trends that shape engineering design and innovation fields,” said Lau Chee Wei, the Sales Director of IME Technology Sdn Bhd. Technology trends aside, a separate track for those from managerial level and C-level executives or business owners was also organised to encourage more thoughts and discussion on transforming corporate culture into an innovative one.
Extending from the support garnered last year, the event managed to gain even more support this year from the government agency, local institutions or associations such as Workforce Development Unit (WDU), Chief Minister Department of Sarawak, Tabung Ekonomi Gagasan Anak Bumiputera Sarawak (TEGAS), Penang Skill Development Centre (PSDC), Malacca Foundry & Engineering Industries Association (MFEIA), Fom Era Vocational Academy, South Johor Foundry & Engineering Industries Association (SJFEIA) and Kolej Kemahiran Tinggi Mara Kuantan (KKTM Kuantan) this year.
Speakers of diverse expertise and background such as En. Muhamed Ali Hajah Mydin from PSDC, Mr. Chevy Kok from Dassault Systèmes, Dato’ Ngei Chee Chau from Feruni Ceramiche, Mr. Tan Eng Hoo from Malaysia TRIZ Innovation Association (MyTRIZ), Ms. Christine Pamela Chandrakasan from Mestrae and Mr. Ganesh Muren from Saora Industries have also been featured to share their innovation journey and stories of how technology or innovation contributes in improving our life.
Besides the sharing sessions, participants also had the chance to try out and experience a number of tools and technology like virtual reality gaming, 3D printers, 3D scanner, design automation tools, plant design and layout tool, as well as humanoid robots. Coupled with a sports theme – inspired by the athletes who represented Malaysia at the Rio Olympics and Paralympics – participants may also earn house points for their team by interacting and participating in the discussions or surveys facilitated by a big data analytics dashboard.
“Innovation and change has never been emphasised enough; in this era where technology is changing at a rate faster than ever, there is no time more suitable than now for us to leverage on technology, and be innovative in transforming our process and business,” said Teoh Tuan Ka, the founder and chairman of IME Group of Companies. Taking Engineering 4.0 and smart manufacturing for example, Teoh said that these trends are gaining increased awareness and acceptance over the year.
When asked if IoT plays an important role in their companies’ future development through a survey conducted by IME during their recent event, 56% of the participants responded that they need to be ready within the next 5 years. Teoh advised local companies to seize the opportunities to transform their business by riding the wave of disruptive technologies. “Especially in such dynamic market competition, we hope that more from the industry will see the importance of adopting technologies to ensure sustainability and maintain competitiveness, this, will eventually drive growth of the industry as a whole.”
